There is no reliable single approval time for BC permits. Separate application preparation, municipal processing, applicant responses and construction inspections. Historical issued-permit elapsed time and a City's advertised service target are different measures, neither a guarantee for your project.
Which clock are you measuring?#
Record four dates or milestones separately: the start of preparation, submission, acceptance of a complete package and permit issuance. A quoted interval is difficult to compare unless its start and end are defined.
Applicant revisions, external referrals and prerequisite approvals can affect the overall elapsed time. Ask the City which stages are included in its current processing guidance for your application category.
Use historical data without promising a queue time#
Vancouver's issued-building-permits dataset includes permit creation, issue and elapsed-day fields. Our linked resource groups the issued records and explains its exclusions. Pending and withdrawn applications are not represented by issued-only statistics.
A historical median is a description of that issued cohort. It does not tell you today's queue position or predict a complex project's approval. Use the City for current category-specific guidance and allow for preparation and revisions in your project plan.
