Surrey building permits
Surrey publishes separate residential checklists for decks and secondary suites. Use the checklist matching your actual scope, including legalization of existing work.

Application pathway
- Identify the property zoning and whether the proposal is a new suite, an existing suite to legalize, or an ordinary renovation.
- Open the project-specific permit checklist through Surrey's building hub. For decks, prepare site, foundation, floor, section and elevation drawings as requested.
- Check the submission instructions for that permit type; do not assume every application follows the same online route.
- Confirm current fees, required trade permits, inspection stages and completion documentation with Surrey before starting work.
Local project considerations
- Surrey states that most house deck additions need a permit. Dimensions and site conditions still determine the review; this is not a province-wide height rule.
- Registering a secondary suite for utilities is separate from obtaining building approval. An existing rental history does not establish that the suite was approved.
- The secondary-suite application checklist includes site and floor plans. Explain which work already exists and which upgrades are proposed.

- Confirm property zoning and separate development, trade and building approvals.
- Ask which drawings, professional schedules and inspection stages apply.
